Welcome to the arid world of Arroyo, bereft of water and hope.

You may wander it, but you'll need a sharp eye and a generous heart. (WARNING: Don't wander in the desert without directions, and don't click on the well. The well is currently bugged,)

I recommend playing in fullscreen in your browser, using a mouse.

Please note that your progress is saved even if you close the tab, so if you want to start over, press "Clear Save" on the starting page before entering the Arroyo.

I hope you enjoy my first proper game (although there's certainly room for expansion!).

It's coded from scratch in html/css/js, so please let me know if you run into any bugs.

Also, if you get stuck, let me know! I'm not sure how hard it is, nor whether I should put hints in the game description.

All art and assets are by me, drawn by hand!

This game contains adult themes and images, including nudity and depictions of pregnancy.

Truly Adorable I would love to see this game... Expanded on.

Game works good on mobile but i still cant find the what im looking for and yes i found the rkng just dont know where i need to start it

I'm glad it's working on mobile! The main trouble I ran into when testing on mobile is that the ring fails to display its hint. The hint reads,

The Crow Queen's Tower:
Wander east until the trees have given way to boulders.
Wander south until the holes have filled with bubbling tar.
At this junction of tree, rock, pit, and pool, the Tower you shall find.

Which is a guide to navigating the desert, to the east of the Spring. Good luck and let me know if you're still running into issues!

Am i supposed to start right where the text is?

Finally found it

Good job! It's a tough one.

I really don't get the desert. I'm following the crows and this tower just isn't showing up. Any suggestions for help?

Hm, it's possible there's something glitching. However, this is how I do it: scroll the page to the right until you stop seeing the big trees and start seeing the big rocks, then scroll the page down until you stop seeing the empty holes and start seeing the pools of tar. That should be the x/y position of the tower. I'd be curious to hear if it's still not working!

IM really lost and yet enjoying the game

I'm glad you're enjoying it! If you're lost in the desert, try exploring the riverbed first--there's a crow in the riverbed guarding a hint to navigating the desert.

thanks ill try

Spent ten minutes looking for stuff, clicked on a well, crashed. Neat.

Wow, I completely forgot about the well. That was planned to be part of a very hard-to-find side quest (so it's very impressive you found it!). I didn't get to it before the end of the jam, and forgot to remove it before publishing. Sorry about that! I'll add a warning to this page for now and make sure that's patched in the next update.

The well in the desert broke the game for me.

(+1)

Very good job finding that! I hid that object so well that I forgot to take it out of the game myself. If you run into this problem, refreshing the itch page will reset you to the beginning but your progress will be saved.

I'll patch that in the next update.

Yo.

This project is extremely interesting. I admit I left this game for the last few games to try because the graphics told me I'd see something interesting in it, and I'm not disappointed.

I like:
-The character design is very good. It reminds me a bit of the illustrations in children's books that tell stories and legends.
-The gameplay is really refreshing. In a way, we really are the protagonist, we progress at our own pace and search in our own way. We look right and left and go back and forth. We wonder if we've forgotten something and turn around. I really saw it as a little illustrated book.
-The storytelling method is very enjoyable.

Like less:
-The only thing missing was the music. If you're having trouble putting it together, you could have directed us to some music on YouTube that would have put us in the sound ambiance you wanted to create.
- The story lacks transitions. We start from the fountain and walk our way, but the adventures are missing? In such a hostile world, I would have liked to see a little more of the life in this world.
- I could have played it much longer.

No bugs found.

Final point:
From an originality standpoint, I think your project surpasses many of the projects in this Jam. It's beautiful, interesting, and lets itself be played at our own pace. It's just missing something in terms of its story to make it a true story. I'm not talking about a prince or a prophecy. But a spark to touch the dreamlike story. I can't say what. That's just my point of view. But I'm not saying that to say your project isn't up to scratch. On the contrary, I really liked what you did.

It's a wonderful demonstration of your ideas that you presented to us. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your creations because I'll be following your work. Thank you for sharing your project with us. Good luck with your work, and I hope to see you soon. :3

Thank you for leaving such an in-depth and kind comment. I have to admit that I'm impressed with your analysis. It's like you had access to my to-do list and knew exactly what I had to cut in order to get the game to a basic completed state in time (music, transitions between areas, multiple more characters and challenges).

Your mention of children's books is fascinating to me, partly because someone else said the same thing about the riverbed section, where you're scrolling down while surrounded by crows. That's not intentional, but I totally can see it. Something about that format of storytelling lends itself well to this kind of gameplay.

I've found people's responses--and especially yours--to this little game very encouraging: almost everyone says simply that they want to see more. That's an incredibly nice thing to hear, and tells me I'm on the right track.  Thank you again.

Reminds me a lot of the old bionicle flash game. Really nice to see where this sort of gameplay could lead!

(+1)

I hadn't known about the flash game, but you got me to watch a youtube documentary on it. They did some fairly impressive stuff, so now I have more cool ideas of what looks good in a browser. Thanks!

This is AWESOME. It's such a creative use of the medium and I've not really seen much like this before. The art was great, and I had a nice time looking around the world. I do wish it was a bit more developed but considering the time scale the jam operated under I have no complaints. A wonderful time and I'd love to see more. Either more of this specifically, or other "stories" done in a similar style.

Thank you for leaving such a nice comment! It's really gratifying to hear that there are people who are interested in this style of game, because I find it really fun to work on.

This map is WAY too big for how empty it is, and what you're looking for isn't very clear besides. I wasted a lot of time in the desert because I didn't realize there was only one thing to find there. Thi feels like it doesnt require a sharp eye so much as time and patience. Very intriguing otherwise

(+4)

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback! I truly value it--I have no sense of difficulty when play-testing on my own.

In the ravine, there's a hint hidden by the crows that tells you how to navigate the desert. I totally agree that it would be better if the game clearly indicated to the player that they need to gain information before entering the desert. I'm sorry you spent so long wandering, since the desert really is massive and empty. 😅

I'm glad you enjoyed the other parts of it! I hope to improve and add to it in the future.

(+2)

ok, the crow hint was deffinately needed. Once I found what the crows where hiding, the hint for the desert was just perfect and felt so good to find the next chapter.

Thanks for the heads up in starting. Looks like this won't work on my phone, but I'll try on pc later.

I've technically managed to finish the game on a phone, but I do recommend PC. Some details/hints are impossible to find without a mouse.
